The medal for the Half Mugello Marathon of 2023 features the Marzocco, an animal linked to Tuscan history. The Marzocco takes its name from the God Mars and was considered a symbol of popular power in the Florentine Republic, where around thirty lions were even kept in a menagerie. The choice of the Half Mugello to use the Marzocco as a symbol on the medal is therefore linked to the tradition and history of Tuscany. Today, only depictions of lions remain, the most famous of which is undoubtedly Donatello's, preserved in the Bargello Museum and in a copy in Piazza della Signoria in front of Palazzo Vecchio. Once a year, on the occasion of the feast of St. John the Baptist, patron saint of Florence, the Order of the Guelf Party celebrates the Marzocco through the traditional rite of coronation. How to get the medal with the Marzocco? Simply run the Half Mugello or the non-competitive Corri Mugello 11 km! We remind you that for those who register online, it is possible to make a donation to CURE2CHILDREN, a charitable foundation that promotes the care of children with oncological diseases directly in their country.
